THE MAGNIFICIENT TA SHEBUBE:  ROOIPUS LODGE

Ta Shebube Rooiputs Lodge is perched on a vegetated red sand dune offering extensive panoramic views of a valley of acacia savanna and grassy plains. It lies in the Kalahari Desert on the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park but is accessed from the Northern Cape as it’s only 20km from Twee Rivieren Restcamp. (They offer transfers from Twee Rivieren so you take a rental car to the Kgalagadi and leave it at the restcamp whilst you stay at Ta Shebube.)

Accommodation

The lodge comprises of nine spacious chalets, a family unit with a double sleeper couch and a luxury desert suite for those wanting a romantic experience. Each chalet is set on an expansive wooden deck and constructed out of a clever mix of wood, thatch, canvas and glass with furnishings reflecting the rich ethnic textures of Southern Africa and the desert.

Each chalet has a sitting area, en suite bathroom with double basins, toilet and an outside shower. Your own private deck makes it easy to enjoy the breath-taking panoramic views of the Kgalagadi Park and its night sky. The Family Suite has a double sleeper couch for up to two small children. (Children of 8 years and older are allowed at the lodge.) The Desert suite has a romantic secluded outdoor bath. Wooden walkways join the main area to the chalets.

The thatched main building contains an inviting yet spacious lounge area, bar, comfortable dining room and well-stocked library/reading area. There’s also a curio shop and plunge pool to cool off during the hot summer days.

The main area is open to give you an unobstructed view of the vast acacia savannah and a small waterhole. During the evenings you enjoy the sounds of the African bush, including the barking geckos early at night, and share the day’s highlights around a roaring boma fire.
